 WASHINGTON D.C. – Hàng năm cứ vào cuối tháng Ba đầu tháng Tư, du khách từ bốn phương trời – kể cả từ nước ngoài lại lũ lượt kéo nhau về thủ đô nước Mỹ để ngắm, nhìn, thưởng thức và say mê vẻ đẹp trời cho của hàng loạt cây anh đào bung hoa nở rộ, sau một mùa đông lạnh buốt ngủ vùi “như con sâu làm tổ, trong trái vải cô đơn.” Hoa đào Dalat, hoa đào Nhật, hoa đào Hàn Quốc, hoa đào Vancouver – và ngay ở Mỹ như Boston, Seattle, San José ... cũng không thiếu hoa đào, nhưng không nơi nào có thể sánh với đào D.C. Không thể mô tả cách nào khác hơn là vẻ đẹp đó được ví như “mười phân vẹn mười.” Nét đặc biệt không đâu có của D.C. là hàng trăm cây anh đào được trồng quanh bờ hồ nhân tạo Tidal Basin tạo nên một khung cảnh tuyệt vời và tuyệt mỹ – khi những cành đào hồng nhạt và trắng rũ xuống gần sát mặt nước hồ lung linh phản chiếu hình ảnh của bóng đào dưới nước, hoặc khi một làn gió nhẹ thổi qua làm những cánh hoa trắng toát tinh sương bay lỏa tỏa và đáp nhẹ xuống giòng nước êm ả của một buổi sáng sắp vào xuân, để rồi lững lờ trôi theo nước là những hình ảnh chỉ có ở D.C. Nếu kể thêm về màu vàng nhạt của nắng sớm hay đỏ rực của chiều tà thì dường như hoa lại chuyển đổi màu sắc để cùng hòa nhập với ánh nắng ban mai hay của hoàng hôn. Vẫn là hồng là trắng đấy nhưng thêm chút vạt nắng vàng của một buổi chiều thì dù không biết làm thơ cũng tự nhiên muốn xuất khẩu thành ... thơ. Đào D.C. là vậy. Ỡm ờ nhưng trong sáng, quyến rũ nhưng thơ ngây, yểu điệu đấy nhưng không kém phần kiêu sa.

Không thể xác định rõ ràng ngày nào thì toàn bộ hoa rộ đẹp vì nụ hoa tùy thuộc hoàn toàn vào thời tiết để khai hoa nở nhụy. Mà thời tiết cuối đông ở DC thì hôm nay ấm áp nắng ráo, chỉ qua đêm hôm sau tuyết trắng lạnh buốt lại rơi vung vãi, rồi đùng một cái là mưa bấc, gió chướng, nhiệt độ lên xuống bất ngờ của thiên nhiên khó tính, sang chảnh làm hoa cứ rụt rè e thẹn muốn khoe sắc mà lại lấp ló ngại ngùng. Nếu không có những bất ngờ trồi xụt khó lường của thiên nhiên thì khách có thể đến với đào trong khoảng hai tuần. Thời gian 14 ngày này không ai có thể đoan chắc. Vì thế không biết bao nhiêu đoàn khách, không biết bao nhiêu nhiếp ảnh gia đã thân hành đến tận D.C. rồi lại ngậm ngùi ra về tay không vì cơn gió vô tình, cơn mưa xối xả bất chợt nào đó làm rụng hết để hoa trở thành thảm hoa trắng xóa trộn lẫn với bùn đất ven hồ, để rồi bị những bàn chân, đôi giày giẫm đạp không thương tiếc.

Lịch Sử

Trang web National Cherry Blossom viết: “Qua sự phối hợp của chính quyền Mỹ và Nhật, hơn 3,000 cây anh đào là món quà hữu nghị của Thị Trưởng Tokyo Yukio Ozaki gởi tặng thành phố Washington D.C. năm 1912. Hàng năm lễ hội lại được tổ chức trong bốn tuần lễ liền thu hút hơn 1.5 triệu khách nhằm tôn vinh tình hữu nghị lâu bền giữa người dân Hoa Kỳ và Nhật Bản. Chương trình lễ hội đa dạng và đầy sáng tạo nhằm quảng bá nghệ thuật, văn hóa truyền thống và đương đại, cùng với nét đẹp của thiên nhiên và tinh thần cộng đồng khắn khít. Các sự kiện đều miễn phí và mở cửa chào đón công chúng thưởng lãm.

Trong một buổi lễ đơn giản ngày 27 tháng Ba năm 1912, Đệ Nhất Phu Nhân Helen Herron Taft và Tử Tước Chinda, phu nhân của đại sứ Nhật Bản, đã trồng hai cây đầu tiên từ Nhật Bản trên bờ bắc của Tidal Basin tại Công Viên West Potomac. Kể từ khi Đệ Nhất Phu Nhân Taft tham gia, các đệ nhất phu nhân Hoa Kỳ tiếp theo đều trở thành những ân nhân ủng hộ Lễ Hội.”

Trung bình một cây anh đào sống khoảng 40 năm, tính đến nay nếu cây nào còn sống thì cũng quá tuổi

thượng thượng thọ. Ước tính đến nay có khoảng 125 cây còn đứng vững bất kể mưa gió, bão tuyết – tức 4% so với con số hơn ba ngàn cây nguyên thủy.

Nổi tiếng nhất, được khách chiếu cố nhiều nhất ưu ái nhất là cây đào có tên “Stumpy.” Cây được bứng đi trong muôn vàn thương tiếc vào cuối tháng Năm, 2024 cùng với hơn trăm cây khác do bị nước ngập úng và cần tu bổ vách ngăn nước hồ dâng cao. Hình dáng kỳ lạ, gốc cây to đen đủi, sần sùi vừa mập lại vừa lùn nhưng không năm nào không trổ hoa trông xa xa như thiếu nữ đang buông mái tóc thề bay trong gió khép nép bên khung cửa sổ. Từ đó “Stumpy” đi vào dĩ vãng chỉ còn nỗi nhớ.

Người viết đã có cơ may sinh sống tại vùng D.C. trong một thời gian dài – và năm nào cũng vậy, không hề bỏ lỡ một cơ hội nào để đến với lễ hội anh đào. Thế rồi khi duyên nợ hết, phải chuyển về nơi đất ấm thì hàng năm cứ khoảng đông hết xuân sang lại nhớ đào ra riết. Lên mạng hỏi trí tuệ nhân tạo – gọi tắt là AI rằng tại sao hình ảnh của hoa đào ở DC lại lưu luyến quyến rũ khách thập phương đến như vậy? AI trả lời: “Tidal Basin – Điểm đến tuyệt vời với những hàng cây anh đào bao quanh các địa danh như Đài Tưởng Niệm Jefferson, Đài Tưởng Niệm Martin Luther King Jr., Đài Tưởng Niệm Franklin D. Roosevelt và xa hơn một chút, bên kia đài tưởng niệm Lincoln Memorial là Bức Tường Đen là những nơi lý tưởng cho cả đi bách bộ thư giãn và chụp ảnh kỷ niệm. Đi một vòng quanh hồ sẽ còn gặp bia tưởng niệm thủy thủ John Paul Jones, vườn hoa Floral Library, ngôi tháp chín tầng Japanese Pagoda và chiếc đèn lòng bằng đá phủ rêu xanh Japanese Lantern – một di tích lâu đời của thời đại phong kiến Nhật. Và nếu từ bờ hồ Tidal Basin phóng mắt nhìn sang bên kia sông Potomac chính là nghĩa trang Arlington National Cemetery – nơi an nghỉ ngàn thu của các anh hùng Mỹ quốc.

Nếu khách thích cảnh đẹp thần tiên và muốn tìm hiểu về văn hóa nghệ thuật, thì việc ghé thăm hoa anh đào ở Washington, D.C. chắc chắn là điều xứng đáng. Tidal Basin, được bao quanh bởi những cây anh đào đặc biệt đẹp tuyệt vời vào thời điểm hoa nở rộ nhất và Lễ Hội Hoa Anh Đào còn có các cuộc diễu hành, biểu diễn âm nhạc, trưng bày nghệ thuật và các sự kiện vui chơi giải trí khác sẽ giúp khách học hỏi hiểu biết thêm về hoa đào cùng nét lịch sử về thủ đô Hoa Kỳ.”

Từ Emeryville đến Chicago

CHICAGO – (Illinois) - Mọi người đang chuyện trò rôm rả. Mấy ông xúm nhau sát phạt náo nhiệt với cỗ bài Tây. Một phụ nữ quấn khăn ngồi ở cuối, lặng lẽ đan áo không màng tới tiếng ồn chung quanh. Vài con trẻ chia nhau mấy cái bánh ngọt cười đùa hồn nhiên. Bỗng nhiên có tiếng hét to: “Coi kìa, đằng xa có ai đang chạy tới!” Đám bụi mù từ chân trời ngày càng rõ hơn – thì ra một toán người đang phi ngựa như bay, đầu đội vành lông chim ó sặc sỡ, mặt mũi vẽ phẩm trắng, đỏ, vàng ghê rợn hung dữ. Họ la hét vừa phóng ngựa như bay đuổi theo đoàn tàu. Rõ ràng họ là thổ dân da đỏ, bộ lạc Cherokee, Choctaw, Cheyenne ... gì đó - những người khách không mời. Không bao lâu họ đuổi kịp và bắt đầu dương cung phóng những mũi tên vào các toa tàu. Thế rồi trong khi con trẻ chui xuống gặm ghế run sợ, tất cả hành khách trong toa cả nam và nữ cũng đã chuẩn bị sẵn. Súng ngắn súng dài kể cả khẩu Winchester, khẩu Colt lợi hại bắt đầu nhả đạn. Hàng loạt mũi tên từ ngoài bắn vào, đạn tóe lửa từ trong bắn ra, có người ngã xuống … đó là một hoạt cảnh sôi động của loại phim cao bồi western được Hollywood dàn dựng dựa vào thời điểm xa xưa khi người da trắng xây dựng và chuyển vận trên tuyến đường sắt xuyên nước Mỹ từ đông sang tây. Từ 1804 đã có tuyến đường ray đầu tiên của nước Mỹ trước khi có nội chiến Nam-Bắc.

Nhưng đó là chuyện từ mấy chục năm trước khi nước Mỹ vẫn còn hoang sơ, người da đỏ và băng cướp cạn vẫn thường xuyên tấn công các đoàn xe lửa đi ngang vùng đất của họ. Những “anh hùng” Jesse James, Frank James, Butch Cassidy … nổi tiếng nhờ các vụ cướp xe lửa thành công và các sát thủ bắn chậm thì chết như Wyatt Earp,Wild Bill Hickok … cũng vang danh thời “Wild, Wild West” ly loạn đó. Ngày nay dĩ nhiên không còn nữa. Và tuyến đường sắt có tên California Zephyr, xình xịch xình xịch chạy suốt gần bốn ngàn cây số với hàng chục trạm dừng từ Emeryville của California đến trạm cuối Chicago của Illinois là một hành trình thú vị, sống động và êm ả tuy có phần … lắc lư. Tàu Zephyr đi qua những khung cảnh nên thơ hùng vĩ với đồi núi, sông lạch, rừng thông, thảm cỏ, đồng bằng, nông trang, trang trại nuôi bò bạt ngàn bao la xa tít tận chân trời. Đi từ tây sang đông mới thấy đất nước USA thật sự vĩ đại, rộng lớn với khí hậu chuyển biến rõ rệt từ vùng này sang tiểu bang khác – lẽ dĩ nhiên kể cả múi giờ. Chẳng thế mà tuyến California Zephyr được xem là một trong những hành trình đẹp nhứt Bắc Mỹ.

Khởi Hành: Emeryville

Xây dựng ở phía bắc San Francisco, nhà ga Emeryville chỉ mới được hình thành năm 1993 và California Zephyr chính thức dùng làm trạm cuối từ 1994, cho dù đã chạy tuyến này từ 1949 theo trang Wikipedia. Cùng sử dụng nhà ga này là các tuyến Capitol Corridor, Coast Starlight, và San Joaquins. Nõi rõ thêm là mỗi tuyến đường xe hỏa của Amtrak chạy khắp nước Mỹ được đặt một tên gọi. Emeryville chỉ được đặt tên “Station” khác với các nhà ga lớn quy mô và tráng lệ có tên “Union Station.” Vậy muốn đi Chicago bằng California Zephyr thì phải đi từ Emeryville Station. Hành khách từ Nam Cali như San Diego, Quận Cam, Los Angeles hay San Jose, San Francisco cũng vẫn đi bằng xe lửa hay xe buýt của Amtrak để đến Emeryville. Rồi từ đó trực chỉ hướng đông.

Chúng ta hãy cùng bước lên California Zephyr. Tiếng còi hú vang dội, tàu bắt đầu chuyển bánh, từ từ chậm chạp rời bến. Dưới sân ga người tiễn vẫy tay chào nhau, khách trên tàu gởi lại mấy nụ hôn gió. Kẻ đi người ở được tiễn tận chân tàu – không khó khăn rườm rà như ở phi trường phải qua bao nhiêu là thủ tục khám xét giấy tờ an ninh và cách ly – luôn cả tháo giầy, tháo jacket, giơ tay cao khi vào phòng quét cơ thể. Đưa tận nơi đón tận cửa là điểm mạnh của xe lửa nhưng điểm yếu là đường dài lê thê, lắc qua lắc lại lắc mãi vẫn chưa thấy bến đậu. Nhưng mà chỉ những ai muốn thưởng thức sự an nhàn, chẳng quan tâm đến thời thế, không màng đến những bận bịu của cuộc sống xã hội như cơm áo gạo tiền thì mới chọn xe lửa để có thời gian ngẫm nghĩ, suy tư về mình về tha nhân – kể cả những mối tình lớn nhỏ từ xưa đến nay và sắp tới (?) Chẳng hạn muốn đến Chicago Union Station phải trải qua 35 nhà ga lớn nhỏ, khoảng 52 giờ đồng hồ, trên tuyến đường dài 2,400 miles và hai đêm ngủ trên tàu. Nhưng để đổi lại – mà đi phi cơ không thể so được là được chiêm ngưỡng những cảnh đẹp tuyệt mỹ chỉ có trong tranh: một USA hoang sơ hùng vĩ như từ thủa khai sinh lập địa.

Từ California, Zephyr vượt biên giới sang Nevada, rồi Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, và cuối cùng là Chicago của Illinois. Zephyr 6 chạy từ tây sang đông, và Zephyr 5 chạy ngược lại. Cali đang ấm áp nắng rực thì khi tàu bắt đều leo núi Rocky Mountains hay đi vào vùng Sierra Nevada thì rừng cây bạt ngàn, núi cao có thể có cả tuyết phủ kín nếu đi vào mùa đông. Lúc tàu đi vào đất Utah thì phải nói núi đồi đỏ hoe cao vời vợi với hình dáng kỳ lạ, chuyển sang Colorado thì bỗng nhiên màu đỏ biến dạng, núi vẫn trùng điệp nhưng bị thời gian bào tròn phủ kín với đồi thông xanh ngắt. Tàu vượt sông Mississippi nước đục, sóng cuồn cuộn khi rời Iowa để vào Illinois. Vào đến đất Trung-Tây Hoa Kỳ hành khách được nhìn thấy những nông trại bao la bát ngát – nơi thì nuôi bò, nơi trồng nông phẩm. Hướng mắt nhìn xa xa sẽ bắt gặp hàng trăm con dê đàn bò lặng lẽ gặm cỏ vàng thờ ơ với con rắn Zephyr đang uốn lượn trên đường ray. Thi thoảng lại xuất hiện một hay căn nhà mái tôn vách đỏ chói, thấp thoáng bên con sông nước chảy lững lờ. Có vẻ đúng như phim ảnh, những người đi khai hoang hay đi tìm vàng từ đông sang tây thủa xưa đều dựng nhà cạnh hồ nước hay sông lạch để lấy nước sinh hoạt ăn uống và tưới hoa mầu trên miếng đất sau nhà. Đôi khi cũng thấy máy bơm nước bằng gió với chong chóng bay vù vù khác hẳn với những cánh quạt khổng lồ của máy tua-bin gió (wind farm) chậm chạp yên ả. Ngồi ngắm cảnh vật trôi dạt về phía sau từ “toa ngắm cảnh – observation car” với hai bên hông và trần toa bằng kiếng trong khi Zephyr cứ gầm gừ tiến về phía trước hay được phục vụ ba bữa ăn khá thịnh soạn và ngon miệng sáng-trưa-chiều với một thực đơn tự chọn hoặc người “tiếp viên hỏa xa – conductor” của riêng mỗi toa dễ mến giúp dọn dẹp kéo giường, chuẩn bị bình cà-phê nóng hổi thơm lừng mỗi sáng sớm hoặc nhắc nhở từng hành khách về trạm ga sắp đến để chuẩn bị xuống tàu chỉ là chuyện rất rất nhỏ thường ngày của Amtrak. Chuyện vô cùng lớn của Amtrak là chậm và trễ.

Chuyện Lớn

Thật vậy, chậm trễ, hỏng hóc là bệnh nan y trầm kha của Amtrak. Chẳng thế mà Quốc Hội Hoa Kỳ mới đây đã phải can thiệp và dự luật H.R. 769 được hai Dân Biểu Josh Gottheimer (DC-NJ) và Thomas Kean (CH-NJ) đưa ra nhằm buộc Bộ Giao Thông phải ra quy định cho Amtrak phải bồi hoàn vé tàu cho khách hàng nếu tàu bị chậm trễ quá ba giờ hoặc phải hủy chuyến đi do lỗi của Amtrak. Theo bài viết trên trang mạng “Railway Supply,” Amtrak vướng vào nhiều trở ngại cho dù được sự tài trợ của liên bang vẫn không hay chưa cải thiện được một cách khả quan triệt để: hạ tầng cơ sở cổ lỗ, đầu máy kéo các toa quá cũ, thiếu cơ phận thay thế, phải tu sửa thường xuyên, thêm vào đó là đường sắt dùng chung với tàu kéo hàng - freight train thì chỉ cần một bên có vấn đề là bên kia phải ngưng chờ. Chờ một hay hai tiếng đến có khi hàng nhiều giờ. Một lý do nữa được bài viết đưa ra là không chừng việc quản lý thiếu hữu hiệu đưa đến Amtrak phải gặp nhiều vấn đề nan giải. Tóm lại phải cải thiện hệ thống điều hành từ cốt lõi của Amtrak đến nâng cấp đường ray, toa xe, chuyển đổi đầu máy chạy dầu diesel sang điện khí hóa cùng nhiều vấn đề khác để thích hợp với đường lối tinh giảng cơ cấu và tiết kiệm ngân sách của chính quyền hiện tại, đồng thời phục vụ khách hàng hữu hiệu hơn. Amtrak đã có kế hoặch chuyển sang loại tàu nhanh - bullet train, vừa êm vừa rút ngắn thời gian chạy và rất hạp với môi trường xanh hiện đại.

Không thể chối cãi, cũng không thể dẹp bỏ Amtrak vì đó là tuyến giao thông cực kỳ quan trọng nối liền đô thị và vùng quê hẻo lánh giúp hàng vạn hành khách di chuyển, cùng lúc gìn giữ di sản thân quý của tuyến đường xe lửa đã có từ cả 40 năm trước.

Đến Bến: Chicago

Xình xịch, lắc lư, chậm trễ ở ga này, chờ ở ga kia, đổi tài ở ga nọ cuối cùng thì California Zephyr cũng hú còi lừng lững ì ạch tiến vào Chicago Union Station. Sau một hành trình dài đằng đẵng, hành khách lục tục hối hả xuống tàu, gặp gỡ, vỗ về và ôm ấp người thân ra đón ngay cửa lên xuống. Cô tiếp viên hỏa xa vội vã thu tóm rác rến, sắp xếp lại phòng ngủ roomette (có hai ghế ngồi có thể kéo thành giường hai tầng – dùng nhà vệ sinh chung) hay room (phòng ngủ giường rộng, có nhà vệ sinh + nhà tắm riêng) mà khách vừa rời đi. Nhân viên Amtrak lại vẫn công việc thường ngày như mọi ngày xúm xít tu bổ, quan sát từng toa tàu, chăm chú từng bộ phận của đầu máy để rồi ngay ngày hôm sau California Zephyr 6 được đổi tên gọi thành California Zephyr 5 chạy ngược trở lại từ Chicago đến Emeryville.

Đến giờ khởi hành, còi tàu rú lên, vang dội.

President Trump's Inaugural Address

 Thank you very, very much.

Vice President Vance, Speaker Johnson, Senator Thune, Chief Justice Roberts, justices of the United States Supreme Court, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, President Biden, Vice President Harris and my fellow citizens, the golden age of America begins right now.

From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer. During every single day of the Trump administration I will very simply put America first.

Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored, the scales of justice will be rebalanced. The vicious, violent and unfair weaponization of the justice department and our government will end. And our top priority will be to create a nation that is proud, prosperous and free.

America will soon be greater, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before.

I return to the presidency, confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success. A tide of change is sweeping the country. Sunlight is pouring over the entire world, and America has the chance to seize this opportunity like never before, but first, we must be honest about the challenges we face.

While they are plentiful, they will be annihilated by this great momentum that the world is now witnessing. In the United States of America, as we gather today, our government confronts a crisis of trust. For many years, a radical and corrupt establishment has extracted power and wealth from our citizens, while the pillars of our society lay broken and seemingly in complete disrepair. We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalogue of catastrophic events abroad.

It fails to protect our magnificent law-abiding American citizens but provides sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals, many from prisons and mental institutions, that have illegally entered our country from all over the world. We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defense of foreign borders but refuses to defend American borders, or, more importantly, its own people. Our country can no longer deliver basic services in times of emergency, as recently shown by the wonderful people of North Carolina — been treated so badly — and other states who are still suffering from a hurricane that took place many months ago.

Or more recently, Los Angeles, where we are watching fires still tragically burned from weeks ago without even a token of defense. They’re raging through the houses and communities, even affecting some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in our country, some of whom are sitting here right now.

They don’t have a home any longer. That’s interesting. We can’t let this happen. Everyone is unable to do anything about it. That’s going to change.

We have a public-health system that does not deliver in times of disaster, yet more money is spent on it than any country anywhere in the world, and we have an education system that teaches our children to be ashamed of themselves, in many cases, to hate our country, despite the love that we try so desperately to provide to them. All of this will change starting today, and it will change very quickly.

My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal and all of these many betrayals that have taken place, and to give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and indeed, their freedom. From this moment on, America’s decline is over.

How our liberties and our nation’s glorious destiny will no longer be denied, and we will immediately restore the integrity, competency and loyalty of America’s government. Over the past eight years, I have been tested and challenged more than any president in our 250-year history, and I’ve learned a lot along the way.

The journey to reclaim our republic has not been an easy one, that I can tell you. Those who wish to stop our cause have tried to take my freedom and indeed, to take my life.

Just a few months ago, in a beautiful Pennsylvania field, an assassin’s bullet ripped through my ear, but I felt, then and believe even more so now that my life was saved for a reason: I was saved by God to make America great again.

That is why, each day, under our administration of American patriots, we will be working to meet every crisis with dignity and power and strength. We will move with purpose and speed to bring back hope, prosperity, safety and peace for citizens of every race, religion, color and creed. For American citizens, Jan. 20, 2025, is Liberation Day.

It is my hope that our recent presidential election will be remembered as the greatest and most consequential election in the history of our country. As our victory showed, the entire nation is rapidly unifying behind our agenda, with dramatic increases in support from virtually every element of our society: young and old, men and women, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, urban, suburban, rural and very importantly, we had a powerful win in all seven swing states and the popular vote, we won by millions of people.

To the black and Hispanic communities, I want to thank you for the tremendous outpouring of love and trust that you have shown me with your vote. We set records, and I will not forget it. I’ve heard your voices in the campaign, and I look forward to working with you in the years to come. Today is Martin Luther King Day, and his honor, this will be a great honor, but in his honor, we will strive together to make his dream a reality. We will make his dream come true.

National unity is now returning to America, and confidence and pride is soaring like never before. In everything we do, my administration will be inspired by a strong pursuit of excellence and unrelenting success. We will not forget our country, we will not forget our Constitution, and we will not forget our God.

Today, I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense. It’s all about common sense.

First, I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came. We will reinstate my “Remain in Mexico” policy.

I will end the practice of catch and release. And I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country.

Under the orders I signed today, we will also be designating the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. And by invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, I will direct our government to use the full and immense power of federal and state law enforcement to eliminate the presence of all foreign gangs and criminal networks bringing devastating crime to U.S. soil, including our cities and inner cities.

As Commander in Chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is exactly what I am going to do. We will do it at a level that nobody has ever seen before.

Next I will direct all members of my cabinet to marshal the vast powers at their disposal to defeat what was record inflation and rapidly bring down costs and prices.

The inflation crisis was caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices, and that is why today, I will also declare A National Energy Emergency. We will drill baby, drill.

America will be a manufacturing nation once again, and we have something that no other manufacturing nation will ever have: the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth. And we are going to use it. Let me use it. We will bring prices down, fill our strategic reserves up again, right to the top, and export American energy all over the world. We will be a rich nation again, and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it.

With my actions today, we will end the Green New Deal, and we will revoke the Electric Vehicle Mandate, saving our auto industry and keeping my sacred pledge to our great American autoworkers.

In other words, you’ll be able to buy the car of your choice.

We will build automobiles in America again at a rate that nobody could have dreamt possible just a few years ago. And thank you to the autoworkers of our nation for your inspiring vote of confidence. We did tremendously with their vote.

I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families. Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens. For this purpose, we are establishing the External Revenue Service to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury, coming from foreign sources.

The American Dream will soon be back and thriving like never before. To restore competence and effectiveness to our federal government. My administration will establish the brand new Department of Government Efficiency.

After years and years of illegal and unconstitutional federal efforts to restrict free expression, I will also sign an executive order to immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech to America. Never again will the immense power of the state be weaponized to persecute political opponents, something I know something about. We will not allow that to happen. It will not happen again. Under my leadership, we will restore fair, equal and impartial justice under the constitutional rule of law.

And we are going to bring law and order back to our cities.

This week, I will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life. We will forge a society that is colorblind and merit based. As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.

This week, I will reinstate any service members who were unjustly expelled from our military for objecting to the COVID vaccine mandate — with full back pay. And I will sign an order to stop our warriors from being subjected to radical political theories and social experiments while on duty. It’s going to end immediately. Our armed forces will be free to focus on their sole mission, defeating America’s enemies.

Like in 2017 we will again build the strongest military the world has ever seen. We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into. My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier. That’s what I want to be, a peacemaker and the unifier. I’m pleased to say that as of yesterday, one day before I assumed office, the hostages in the Middle East are coming back home to their families.

America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world. A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs.

President McKinley made our country very rich through tariffs and through talent. He was a natural businessman, and gave Teddy Roosevelt the money for many of the great things he did, including the Panama Canal, which has foolishly been given to the country of Panama.

The United States, I mean, think of this, spent more money than ever spent on a project before, and lost 38,000 lives in the building of the Panama Canal. We have been treated very badly from this foolish gift that should have never been made, and Panama’s promise to us has been broken.

The purpose of our deal and the spirit of our treaty has been totally violated. American ships are being severely overcharged and not treated fairly in any way, shape or form, and that includes the United States Navy. And above all, China is operating the Panama Canal. And we didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back.

Above all, my message to Americans today is that it is time for us to once again act with courage, vigor and the vitality of history’s greatest civilization. So as we liberate our nation, we will lead it to new heights of victory and success. We will not be deterred.

Together, we will end the chronic disease epidemic and keep our children safe, healthy and disease-free. The United States will once again consider itself a growing nation, one that increases our wealth, expands our territory, builds our cities, raises our expectations and carries our flag into new and beautiful horizons.

And we will pursue our Manifest Destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars.

Ambition is the lifeblood of a great nation, and right now, our nation is more ambitious than any other. There’s no nation like our nation. Americans are explorers, builders, innovators, entrepreneurs and pioneers. The spirit of the frontier is written into our hearts. The call of the next great adventure resounds from within our souls.

Our American ancestors turned a small group of colonies or the edge of a vast continent into a mighty republic of the most extraordinary citizens on Earth. No one comes close. Americans pushed thousands of miles to a rugged land, of untamed wilderness.

They crossed deserts, scaled mountains, braved untold dangers, won the Wild West, ended slavery, rescued millions from tyranny, lifted billions from poverty, harnessed electricity, split the atom, launched mankind into the heavens and put the universe of human knowledge into the palm of the human hand.

If we work together, there is nothing we cannot do and no dream we cannot achieve.

Many people thought it was impossible for me to stage such a historic political comeback. But as you see today, here I am, the American people have spoken.

I stand before you now as proof that you should never believe that something is impossible to do. In America, the impossible is what we do best.

From New York to Los Angeles, from Philadelphia to Phoenix, from Chicago to Miami, from Houston to right here in Washington, D.C., our country was forged and built by the generations of patriots who gave everything they had for our rights and for our freedom.

They were farmers and soldiers, cowboys and factory workers, steel workers and coal miners, police officers and pioneers who pushed onward, marched forward and let no obstacle defeat their spirit or their pride.

Together, they laid down the railroads, raised up the skyscrapers, built great highways, won two world wars, defeated fascism and communism and triumphed over every single challenge that they face.

After all, we have been through together, we stand on the verge of the four greatest years in American history. With your help, we will restore America’s promise, and we will rebuild the nation that we love — and we love it so much. We are one people, one family and one glorious nation under God.

So to every parent who dreams for their child and every child who dreams for their future, I am with you. I will fight for you, and I will win for you. We’re going to win like never before.

In recent years, our nation has suffered greatly, but we are going to bring it back and make it great again, greater than ever before. We will be a nation like no other, full of compassion, courage and exceptionalism.

Our power will stop all wars and bring a new spirit of unity to a world that has been angry, violent and totally unpredictable.

America will be respected again and admired again, including by people of religion, faith and good will.

We will be prosperous. We will be proud. We will be strong, and we will win like never before. We will not be conquered, we will not be intimidated, we will not be broken, and we will not fail.

From this day on, the United States of America will be a free, sovereign and independent nation. We will stand bravely, we will live proudly, we will dream boldly, and nothing will stand in our way, because we are Americans, the future is ours, and our Golden Age has just begun. Thank you.
